138th Street Landfill | Chicago, Illinois, USA | Client: Land & Lakes

138th Street Landfill is a closed unlined landfill owned by Land & Lakes.  The landfill is located on the shores of Little Calumet River in Chicago.  Contamination of ground water and migration of contaminants from the landfill into the river had been a concern since the mid-1990s.  Globex performed extensive ground water contamination modeling to determine the extent of the contamination plume in the vicinity of the landfill and at the shores of the river.  Globex met with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) on numerous occasions and prepared contamination evaluation reports, contamination assessment reports, and corrective action reports.  As part of the contamination corrective action plan, a 20-ft deep slurry wall with a deep ground-water interception system was presented to the IEPA.  Globex also proposed a tilted panel vertical wall near the toe of the landfill to improve aesthetics of the landfill.  The proposed slurry wall was designed to be keyed into the underlying clay layer to prevent lateral migration of landfill contaminants into the river.

Globex prepared all the design related documents for the construction of the slurry wall, deep ground water interceptor, and tilted panel vertical wall, including construction drawings, specifications, construction quality assurance plans, engineer's cost estimate, and performance criteria.  Globex conducted all the permitting activities required to obtain approval from the IEPA for the proposed corrective plan.  These corrective action measures were successfully implemented following approval from the IEPA.
