Biscayne Landing | North Miami Beach, Florida, USA | Client: Biscayne Landing

The Biscayne Landing is a residential development including high rise condominium units and town-house residential units. The entire development is constructed over an unlined landfill. Globex was retained by Biscayne Landing to evaluate the dynamic compaction program prepared to densify subsurface waste at the site. Globex developed an evaluation plan which consisted of various scenarios of compaction factors, including weight of the tamper, spacing of drop points, and number of drops. Foundation strength before dynamic compaction was estimated by performing borings with continuous measurement of the number of blows per foot to the bottom of the underlying waste. The same procedure was repeated after implementation of each scenario of compaction to evaluate the impact of the dynamic compaction.  The evaluation results were summarized in a report and the recommended scenario was identified. Globex worked with the dynamic compaction contractor to implement the dynamic compaction necessary to densify the foundation below the proposed structures and major roads within the development.

Biscayne Landing had planned storage of excess waste screening debris on site in the form of landscaped mounds of waste debris. Globex was requested to evaluate the stability of the mounds considering that the waste debris had different characteristics from regular waste placed in a landfill. Globex evaluated the characteristics of different types of debris, and developed strength parameters for each type of waste. Based on these strength parameters, Globex performed slope stability analyses to evaluate safety factors against slope failure. Results were summarized in a geotechnical report, which was submitted to Biscayne Landing and the development designer.
