A brownfields site is a real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that there are more than 450,000 brownfields sites within the United States. Cleaning up and reinvesting in brownfields sites increases local tax bases, provides additional jobs, removes neighborhood eyesores, and improves and protects the environment.
