Suddath Storage Depot | Pompano Beach, Florida, USA | Client: General Contractor
A local large general contractor was retained by Suddath to develop a large storage warehouse. The project was located above an old closed unlined landfill. Upon completion of the project, the county regulatory agency would not issue the certificate of occupancy because the general contractor had not addressed collection of gases generated in the landfill directly below the warehouse building. Globex was retained by the general contractor to resolve the issues. Globex designed a passive gas collection system to be installed at the perimeter of the building to collect as much as possible at the building perimeter. The design involved perforated pipes installed in a granular sand bedding with a geomembrane barrier layer installed above the granular sand bedding. Since this system was not sufficient to collect gases from underneath the building, Globex prepared a routine gas monitoring plan that would be implemented by the owner. The monitoring plan required measurement of methane gas concentrations on a regular basis to ensure the concentration of gases within the warehouse will not exceed 25 percent of the lower explosive limit. The plan also included special procedures for venting and circulating air within the warehouse on a daily basis. The combination of the designed passive gas collection system and the monitoring plan was reviewed and approved by the regulatory agency on an expedited basis so that the certificate of occupancy could be issued. Additionally, Globex designed and permitted a lining system for all perimeter stormwater ditches to prevent percolation of stormwater runoff into the underlying waste in accordance with the regulatory agency requirements
