The Surfside Landfill site is located in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Surfside Landfill site includes approximately 95 acres of unlined landfill. From 1949 until 1977, wastes were placed in the landfill. As part of negotiations with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) to close the landfill, all legal dumping was stopped in March 1977. It was reported that the landfill received municipal solid waste (MSW), white goods, vehicle bodies, and tires. Florida Auto Auction of Orlando, Inc. purchased the site in July 2004 and is proposing to construct an auto auction facility at the site. The auto auction development will consist of approximately 92 acres of paved parking area and 3 acres of buildings.
